As a Community Interest Company, Support Horizons has a Board of Non-Executive Directors who act in a voluntary capacity. The Board provide an independent view on the running of the organisation, governance and best practice. They oversea and constructively challenge management in its strategy and policy making and support the CEO in specialist fields.

Terri Lazzari, Chief Executive Officer

Terri joined the team in 2019 and has a wide range of experience in both the commercial and charity sectors where she specialised in learning disabilities. Read more about Terri in our quick Q&A:

What is your background?

I started my career in the private sector, originally in hospitality before moving into childcare and care homes. I was based nationally and grew disillusioned both with the frequent travel and the focus on profit rather than quality of care. I wanted to do something more fulfilling and the opportunity came to join Treloar’s, in Alton, a school and college for severely disabled young people. Here I was introduced to Makaton, a language programme combining signs, symbols and speech used by people with learning disabilities, a charity which I later moved to and led as Acting CEO.

What appealed to you about Support Horizons?

I am passionate about inclusion for the disabled, so Support Horizons was a really good fit for me, as well as being local since I live in Sandhurst, I have never been so close to my office.

What do you like most about your role?

I love the fact that our Support Workers and clients call into the office on a regular basis which enables the office team to get to know them better. It has been really rewarding to see the feedback from the customer survey which shows what a difference our support makes to them, I am proud to be part of that.

What is your biggest challenge?

Recruitment remains our biggest challenge and I find it frustrating when we are unable to deliver all the support that our clients want. The situation is improving as we have recruited several excellent new staff in the last few weeks but we still have room for more.

What do you see as a solution to this problem?

I want to see more government support to attract young people to begin a career in the sector. Many of those we work with would like people of their own age and similar interests to support them. One customer said he wants more male support workers so he can talk about ‘men stuff like cars and bikes’. Over half our Support Workers have been with us for more than 5 years and many wish they had joined the sector earlier in their careers so we know that it can be a really rewarding career.

What is your strategy for the organisation?

I want to develop from a CQC rated Good to Outstanding and we have four main pillars to help is achieve this: quality, financial security, aspirational and professional. This will take determination and patience, so I won’t be retiring any time soon (not that I am even near retirement age).

What about you might surprise us?

Until recently I was a qualified scuba diver. I have dived all over the world and with many amazing creatures, including sharks, manta rays, seahorses and turtles. My qualification has now lapsed as I have not dived for over 3 years so I will have to retake it if I want to down to 30m again. I don’t mind the practical side but there is also a difficult written test and studying on holiday is not my idea of fun.
